The Castle Review Essay Example

The Castle Review Paper Essay on The Castle Review this unusual of its kind, since it is a review of unread books. In general, the history of my relationship with this book is strongly reminiscent of the relations within the novel itself. Maybe thats why I have it, and lay out. I started to read The Castle three times. For the first time accidentally fallen into the hands of the book. The second time, I already knew who the Kafka and had some idea about the artistic value of the Castle. The third time I was convinced that the genius of Kafka and I have to read at least this work at least for the memories. Nothing came of We can not say that Castle left me cold (otherwise I would not be writing this review), I was not bored him to read and can not even say that I did not like this book -. Just when I read I had a huge psychological discomfort. And here we go directly to the book and features the artistic style of Kafka. It is said that Kafka wrote his book based on his own dreams. I do not know how true this is, but the atmosphere inside the Castle, and that the most important thing the logic of action of his characters definitely taken out of sleep. All social communication, which focuses people in the real world (social norms, communication, social roles, status, etc.), in the Castle world are shaky and blurred. Unable to determine the social structure of the Castle of society, it is impossible to divide it into bad and good, strong and weak, superior and inferior. The only absolute is the castle itself, and the only social criteria proximity to the Castle. However, this criterion has a huge degr ee of uncertainty and variability. This does not mean that in a society Castle chaos, though the impression periodically arises in fact a hierarchy there are always heroes actions obey a certain logic but to the reader (and partly for the main character), this logic remains hidden and as a result can not be any assess the implications of what is happening in the novel or create options for further developments. Everything flows and changes, as in a dream, the characters actions motives are not clear, the consequences of these acts are vague. A characteristic here is a scene where the main character in a snowstorm lost among his acquaintance town streets (up to this point I have finished reading:) Personally, I simply got tired wandering among friends (seemingly) characters. who once again are not who they say I took them. They caused a growing sense of irritation in me. All these changes, obeying the logic unknown to me, infuriated me more and more with every page. I have nothing to rely on in this novel, I can not breathe in it. PS Knowing what the outcome of the attempts of the protagonist get to the castle, I know what will end my efforts to read the Castle ».

Mini-Ethnography Essays

Mini-Ethnography Essays Mini-Ethnography Paper Mini-Ethnography Paper Also, I came to notice that the majority of the students were sitting right in front of the teachers desk in a ex. cube of students. 0:02 class started and the teacher put notes on the board and began her lecture. Out of 29 kids, only two had laptops. One of them were taking pictures of the notes while the other was typing them. Additionally, two more kids were on their cellophane not paying attention at all. Those students were setting in the back row with their hoods up and all relaxed. The majority of the students were taking notes but when the teacher started hinting about some questions that might be on the next test; everyone started writing what the teacher was saying. The teacher would ask specific questions to the lass and I found out that the majority of the students that answered back were sitting directly in her point of view or the front row. Some students I saw were highlighting important things while taking their notes. Something that shocked me was that there was a students cellophane that went off in class and the teacher did not get mad; however, the student was a middle age female adult so maybe that was why the teacher did not react. I started watching the middle aged student and saw how she would never break eye contact with the teacher and also she would nod occasionally to let her know that she understands the topic. It took me a long time to notice that everyone that was taking notes had their cellophane setting right on their desk as well. I came to a conclusion that having your phone out on the desk was like telling the teacher anemia I will listen and take notes to learn; however, if I get a text message I am going to drop what I am doing and text my friend back instead of taking notes. Class ended at 10:32 because the teacher got done with her lecture and everyone started packing up while she was stilling talking. Mini-Ethnography By _claimable_

The Life and Work of Joseph Hayden Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Life and Work of Joseph Hayden - Essay Example Hayden was by all accounts a healthy, fun loving person equally loved by friends and admirers, and his works are known for their humor with several false endings and the occasionally chord that stands out above the rest. He died a celebrity, though born in humble settings. Music came his name, fame and considerable wealth. The performance of the Creation, organized in his honor the year before he died was attended by the who’s who of European music as well several members of the aristocracy. This paper is an exposition of his life and work and is the author’s tribute to one of the greatest composers of the western world. The classical period of western music is widely considered to be between 1750 and 1830; and followed by the Baroque period that began circa 1600. The classical period is thus named due to the general adulation for classical antiquity, particularly Ancient Greece, that permeated all creative fields such as Art, Architecture and the sciences. There was a general appreciation for grandeur and the preference for simplicity and homophony over the polyphony of the Baroque period. While Bach was one of the leading maestros of the previous era, the classical period will bear the names of Hayden and Mozart. ... Hayden grew up in the village in a musical environment, with frequent singing sessions in his house and the village. From this rustic musical setting to the sophistication of Austrian music was a big leap for the young Haydn; one that would not be accomplished without a great deal of suffering. Haydn being musically gifted, his uncle Johann Matthias Frankh, the schoolmaster and choirmaster in Hainburg, took him in as his ward so that he could receive formal training in Music. Haydn went with Frank to Hainburg when he was six years old and never again lived with his parents. For reasons that are not really clear – perhaps due to poverty or simply due to indifference, Haydn was not fed very well in this household and writes of being constantly hungry. However, he did learn to play the violin and the harpsichord. He also played treble parts in the church choir, which soon attracted the attention of the general public. After here, he was accepted as the ward of Georg von Reutter, the director of music in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna in 1740 moved to Vienna, where he worked for the next nine years as a chorister and his younger brother Michael joined him in 1745. However, he still continued to be hungry though Reutter did give his education in Latin, the languages and the violin (Geiringer & Geiringer). Moreover, St Stephen’s Cathedral was at the center of Austrian Musical tradition and Haydn benefitted enormously simply by means of the exposure and collaboration that he was able to form there. With his physical maturity, he was soon unable to be a choirboy any longer and by 1749, declared his independence from Reutter, and began work as a freelance musician. The time as a freelance musician is not particularly fun to anyone but given

Holistic Child Development With Special Needs Children Research Paper

Holistic Child Development With Special Needs Children - Research Paper Example In third world countries, Holistic Child Development is hindered by the discriminative social-economic and cultural factors that have provided a home for poverty (Santrock, 152). A clear outline of understanding of Holistic Child development is ideal in establishing the expectations between field ministries and missions of mercy. By provision of clear Holistic Child Development framework, the achievement of better training and evaluation is possible. Relevant programs can also take effect in the campaign for Holistic Child development. In the quest for Holistic child Development, four factors are considered and defined; Spiritual Development – This is the concept of creating change in the relationship with God and more awareness about Him. It is the subject where questions such as who am I, why am I here, what meaning does life have; are answered. This process of growth brings the believer in the maturity of Christ. Physical Development – This defines the changes in the sizes body organs. In this domain, health and growth are usually addressed together (Fox and Robert, 67). Social Economic Development – This addresses the change in the relationships between people. It consist changes in emotions and personality. According to a study of humans, it was discovered that emotional domain and social are inseparable. In merging the two together, we realize that the communication plays a major role in the growth of children in the fulfillment of emotional needs. Cognitive Development – It is true that the missions of mercy provide basic resources for the children who live in economic poverty. However, the subject of poverty seems to be multi-dimensional. Economic poverty would imply monetary handouts, micro-enterprise interventions and business ventures,... This report stresses on the concept of holistic child development which might be new. However, the principles behind it are definitely not, It is a reminder of what God requires of us as we focus on the blessing that comes out of a marriage; a child. Metaphorically, Holistic Child Development can be viewed as a lens that helps parents to magnify their approach toward handling a child in all aspect of its life. This paper makes a conclusion that different people have different perceptions towards children with disabilities. The implementation of any interventions needs to come after an effort to transform the way of thinking and campaign towards equality and equity. The disability in children is a major challenge for their family members. For people already living in hard situations, this calls for a high physical and emotional stress. It is important that in trying to improve on the situation of disability cases, the family members should also be considered more so in term of their environmental needs. These considerations would require a holistic child development approach, which involves as mention before; proper national policies and fair allocation of resources to promote access. Because of the simple fact that no one has an idea of what the disabled are undergoing better than they do, they should be included in the implementation of the programs. The growth of a child comes along with changes in its needs. Therefore, every child at least deserves the opportunity to develop and explore his or her own talent in environmentally friendly conditions.

Writing an extended essay in economics Essay Example for Free

Writing an extended essay in economics Essay Approaching an extended essay in any subject area can be an intimidating prospect. However, like most large tasks, the essay is much more manageable if you take it one step at a time and rely on your advisor to lead you in productive directions. What makes for a good economics EE? You may want to look at some previous essays I have on file in my room to get an idea for the scope of topics that recent students have undertaken. There is a lot of variation, but successful ones are nearly always based on a central question that the author attempts to answer. Investigating this question will lead you to review the research of others, to synthesize others work in new ways, and to conduct theoretical or empirical research on your own. In its most basic form, your essay should be an argument, using tools of research and reasoning appropriate to the field of economics, in response to the central question you have chosen to investigate. Producing a good EE can be broken down into a series of stages, as outlined below. Each stage involves a substantial amount of work and, to some degree, must be completed before the following stages can proceed. Steady progress throughout the EE process is crucial to produce a successful essay. Students who achieve the benchmarks for progress set by their advisor are usually able to minimize the amount of stress arising as the final essay deadline approaches. Choosing a topic Selecting a good topic is the first step in a successful research project. You will be devoting considerable energy over an extended period to studying this topic, so it is important to choose an area in which your interest is likely to be sustained through the lengthy research and writing process. Within your area of interest, the most crucial issue is do-ability. A major cause of disappointment and frustration for students is choosing a topic on which it is difficult to make progress, either because the question is so large that they cannot manage it or because the question topic cannot be easily investigated using the tools that they command. While you are the best authority on your own areas of interest, you will have to rely on your advisor’s advice, to help you find a specific topic that you can complete on time with the resources that are available. Specific, focused topics are almost always better than highly general or vague ones. Questions like How can we reduce water pollution? or What determines the rate of technological progress? are so broad that an adequate answer could not fit into an extended essay. However, once you have a general topic, you will need to undertake research in order to narrow it down. Reviewing relevant literature All scholars in economics build on the shoulders of others. The first step of your thesis research is to search broadly and deeply to find out what others have discovered about your question. There are many resources available to help you with this search. Everything you read will contain citations to earlier work on related topics. SSRN, EBSCO and Questia, on-line libraries, are excellent resources for economics research. If you cast your net broadly at the beginning, and devote time to this part of the research process, you are more likely to acquire the theoretical background that is essential to conducting further research. As you begin reading for your EE, you should also begin writing. You will need to keep detailed notes on everything you read, including full bibliographic information in the appropriate format. (Be very sure that your notes distinguish between the authors words and your own. Plagiarism can arise inadvertently if you aren’t careful). Photocopy all passages you think you might want to quote and any tables that contain useful data. The notes you make as you read can be the basis of your â€Å"literature-review section†, which is an important part of any research essay. Collecting data If you are doing an EE that requires empirical data, and a good EE will, your biggest obstacle is likely to be assembling your data base. Since you cannot proceed with your analysis until your data are in place, the prompt completion of your data collection is of critical importance. Much of what you need is likely to be easily available through standard published or electronic sources. But there may be other data series for which you will have to search extensively and some you may not ever find there are almost always snags. The first step in data collection is to compile a wish list. You should consider the characteristics of the data that are most desirable for your study. List all of the variables that you think you might need. If you have doubts about the availability of some variables up front, formulate strategies for doing without them in case you cannot obtain them. Once you have your list, start collecting numbers and entering them into your computer data base. The earlier you organize your data into data tables, the better. Creating results Once you have reviewed the relevant literature and collected the data you need for any empirical work you plan to do, you are ready to get down to the central task of research: creating results. The way that you achieve these results depends entirely on the research methodology you and your advisor have chosen. It may involve theoretical reasoning using economic models, combining and/or comparing the results of others, interpreting numerical data, or conducting surveys/experiments. About all that can be said in general about the process of creating results is that some aspects of the results are very likely to surprise you. Solutions of theoretical models, and experimental outcomes usually do not end up exactly as you envisioned them at the beginning. If these results arrive just a few days before the draft of your essay is due, you are unlikely to have time to develop a satisfactory explanation for them or to conduct the additional research that would resolve them. At a bare minimum, you should plan to have all of your results generated two weeks before the first draft of your essay is due. This will give you at least a little time to reflect on and refine them in the completed essay. Finishing the Essay The last stage of preparing your EE draft is the formulation of your conclusions and the preparation of the draft itself. At this stage, you turn all the work have done into a coherent argument, starting with your central question, explaining how your work builds on that of others toward an answer, describing and interpreting your results, then summing everything up with your conclusions. The argument should flow naturally from a statement of the question to a discussion of the contribution of others to a description of your own research to your formulation of an answer. Each section should advance the argument, following from the previous piece and leading to the next one. If a section does not relate to the overall argument of your thesis, it should not be in the essay. It is advisable to leave a week or so before the first draft is due to reread the entire essay and make sure that the pieces fit together. At all stages of writing, you need to deal with issues of formatting. Make sure to include appropriate references and citations in a consistent format the minute you put pen to paper. Do not think that this is something you can do once you finish writing. Additionally, you will need to sequence the numbers of your sections, figures, and tables, produce a table of contents and write an abstract. Revisions Regardless of how good the first draft of your essay is, your advisor will have comments and suggestions for improvement. Arguments that seem clear to you may not be as readable to someone else. There may be flaws in empirical work or theoretical arguments that are not apparent until the entire EE is read in proper sequence. As soon as your advisor tells you that they have finished their reading, you should pick up your draft and read through their comments. You will need to meet with your advisor to discuss the essay and clarify what revisions are necessary. It is to your benefit to understand and fulfill the expectations about revisions since you will have only one chance to improve your essay. Sikh Religion Essay -- essays research papers

The movie that I chose to do this report on is titled, ‘Bend it Like Beckham.’ It is about a Sikh girl who is being raised in England. This girl is confronted with a lot of issues pertaining to her culture and religion and how these both clash with the culture of England. She wants to do things that her fellow colleagues are doing, but is not allowed due to her parent’s strict respect of their religion. In the following pages, I will first explain the significance of the man on the wall in the picture. Then I will move on to cultural issues and their significance with the marriage scenes. The last section will discuss the overall reason for Jess not being able to play soccer.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sikhism is a religion that was started by a man named Guru Nanak Dev around 500 years ago. He wanted to spread a simple message; â€Å"we are all one, created by the one creator of all creation.† During this time India was being split up by differing religions. He simply took no sides, yet respected them all. This is who is in the picture that resides above the mantle. He is considered the first and most important of the ten Gurus. In researching the culture of the Sikhs, I found that they treat these Gurus as Christians would treat saints. (sikhs.org) As Catholics pray to certain saints for certain things, the Sikhs do the same with their Gurus. Whenever they feel they need the help or guidance of one of the Gurus, they simply pray to them. As well as praying to these Gurus, th...

Forward Software Essay

Forward Software, Inc. is a software company potentially facing a copyright infringement lawsuit. The spreadsheet product Forward sells includes an optional menu navigation system identical to that of Focus Software, the original developer of the menu system. Forward’s spreadsheet product currently dominates the market. Focus Software is currently suing a smaller software company that has also used this identical menu system in their spreadsheet software. It is believed that based on the outcome of this pending lawsuit, Forward Software, Inc. may also be sued. Forward has to decide between offering Focus an unsolicited settlement prior to the pending trial’s conclusion or waiting for the outcome and possibly facing litigation. To do this, Forward needs to determine the optimal decision strategy to take and how much the strategy is expected to cost. The hiring of an outside law firm that may be able to provide a prediction of the company’s success in winning a trial must also be considered, as well as the maximum that should be paid for that service. Savings associated with hiring the firm need to be determined and analysis of the best decision strategy will also need to be done. Based on our analysis, the best strategy is to wait until the outcome of the pending lawsuit. If Focus wins that lawsuit and files a lawsuit against Forward, Forward should hire the law firm to conduct the proposed study for the lawsuit. Based on the law firm’s findings (predicted win, predicted loss, can’t predict) Forward will have to decide to go to trial or settle out of court. The results show that unless the firm can make the prediction that Focus would likely win the lawsuit, Focus should settle out of court. The expected costs of this strategy range between $9 – $12.8 million dollars. This includes expected costs associated with hiring the firm. The maximum amount that should be paid for hiring the firm is $1.14 million. If the firm could accurately predict the outcome of the Forward versus Focus case, Forward could expect to save $2.4 million. A decision tree was constructed to determine the best strategy for Forward. This approach was chosen as there were many decisions and states of nature to consider and chronology was important. The decision tree allowed for evaluation in a chronological pattern. In determining the optimal strategy, analysis was performed to determine if it is best to settle now or wait on the verdict of a pending trial, whether to hire or not hire a law firm if sued, and also to determine the value of information that could be provided. Our analysis is as follows -Settle Now or Wait? The optimal strategy indicates that it best is to wait until the outcome of the pending trial. Following the optimal strategy, there is a probability of .64 that Focus will not have to make any payout, this is based highly on waiting on the outcome of the trial as there is a .60 probability that Focus will lose and not initiate a lawsuit. As the bulk of the non-payout probability is based on the out come of the current Focus case, this event was included in a sensitivity analysis of the overall strategy. The analysis was performed to assess how sensitive the strategy is to changes: in the probability of Focus winning its pending lawsuit (0-1); the probability of Forward winning a suit if brought (0-1); the maximum expected settlement if sued (+/-50%); the maximum expected judgment (+/-50%); and the cost of the firm’s research prediction (+/-100%). The torpedo graph below shows that the optimal path is influenced most highly by the probability of 1) Focus winning the pending suit and 2) the probability of Forward winning if sued. Of particular importance is the increase in cost (expected value) based on changes in the probability of the outcome of the pending Focus vs. Discount Software trial. The increase in expected cost to over $6 million indicates that the decision to wait or offer settlement prior to the pending suit’s outcome changed. To determine the point at which the strategy changed base on the probability of the current suit’s outcome, a second sensitivity analysis was performed focusing on this event. The strategy region chart below indicates that the decision to wait or settle now changes if there is a chance great than 67% that Focus will win its pending suit. As there is currently only a 40% chance given to Focus winning its pending trial, the recommended strategy of waiting for the outcome should be followed. (Though Forward should confirm the probabilities assigned to this event.) Do or Don’t Hire a Firm? Should Sam hire this law firm to do a study for the lawsuit and what is the maximum amount of money Sam should pay for the service? Important considerations in determining whether to hire the firm include the value of the information the firm can provide and the cost for this information. To determine the value of the information provided by the firm, expected costs of making the decision with and without the firm’s (free) information must be compared. Without the law firm’s analysis, Forward’s expected cost is $12.1 million. With the firm’s analysis, Forward’s expected cost is reduced to $10.96 million. (This figure assumes the information is provided for free.) The difference in the expected cost with and without the information is $1.14 million. This is the value of the information the firm can provide and is also the maximum amount Forward should pay for the service. If the law firm could accurately predict the outcome of the Forward versus Focus case, how much money can he expect to save? If the firm was able to accurately predict a win or loss, this would be considered perfect information. The expected cost in this case is $9.7 million. The difference between this expected cost and the expected cost of proceeding without the firm’s perfect information ($12.1 million) is $2.4 million. This is the amount Forward could expect to save if the firm was able to accurately predict the outcome of the Forward versus Focus case.

The Basic objective is to maximize yield and minimize risk. The other objectives are as follows: * Stability of Income: An investor considers stability of income from his investment. The movie â€Å"Remember the Titans† revolves around two coaches named Herman Boone and Bill Yoast and how their integration of the first desegregated football team united a segregated town through the success high school football team. This process required highly effective leadership skills. From the beginning of the movie, leadership was apparently obvious. There was a riot over the death of an African American citizen. Coach Yoast actively prevented members of his football team from entering the confrontation. When his players went to participate in the riot, he used his positional power (Bolman, Deal, 2003) to intervene and disrupt their involvement. Conflict Resolution and the ability to effectively manage it can make a huge difference with the success and failure of any process. To pacify the riot, the school board desegregated one of its high schools named T. C. Williams High School and placed an experienced African American coach Named Coach Boone as head coach. The original coach, Coach Yoast, was highly experienced and had 15 years of winning under his tenure at the school. When Coach yoast and Coach Boone initially meet, there was animosity between Coach Boone and Coach Yoast staff. Coach Boone handled all negative responses with positive responses that defused the tension between all members. It was a visual view of similar situations that the book â€Å"Reframing Organizations† by Bolman and Deal bighlighted displayed in chapter 16, Reframing in Action (Bolman, Deal, 2003). Conflict resolution was also displayed when Coach Yoast decided to take the Assistant Coach position under Coach Boone to prevent uproar with all the white players and disgruntled citizens in town. At the town meeting, he prevented further escalation and of an already sensitive situation. I believe his decision was the determining factor that pulled the town and the team together in the long run. It was his decision to stay that brought all the white players and parents back to the team. Further more, he prevented unfair release of Coach Boone by surrendering his chance at the Hall of Fame by challenging authority in a fixed game. His actions, honor and leadership allowed the Titans a chance at the National championship. If Coach Yoast had not remained with the Titans, what would have been the outcome? Restructuring is a challenging process that consumes time and resources, with no guarantee of success. Organizations typically embark on the path when they feel compelled to respond to major problems or opportunities (Bolman, Deal, 2003). The problems that lead to the change in this small Virginia town were on racial lines. The environment shifted and change had to occur for the survival of the town and organizations within the town Bolman, Deal, 2003). The international framework (leader-follower-situation) is also apparent in this movie (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2006). The leadership on the team needed to change to pacify the situation of the time. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing but the leader was placed because of the situation. The previous leader had to become the follower or co-leader because of the situation. Its takes courage, experience and resolve to change roles because of situations, especially if the role is a demotion to a lesser position. In my opinion, the most important part of leadership is interpreting leader-follower-situation and responding efficiently and effectively for the overall good. Coach Yoast was excellent at interpreting situations. His actions and observation skills also facilitated the success of the team racial merger when Gary and Julius came together at football camp. His hesitation to interfere when Gary and Julius initially united on the field, in what initially appeared to be a confrontation, brought the team together. Since Julius and Gary are team leaders informally and formally respectfully, Coach Yoast ability to interoperate the situation and allow them to celebrate brought the team together. Coach Boone had an excellent follower r Co-leader. Coach Hines’ co-leadership abilities seemed to be the conscious for Coach Boone. He steps in and positively influenced Coach Boone decision. Also, Coach Yoast is excellent as a co-leader. The success of an organization or team is incumbent upon the abilities of everyone and all successful leaders have highly effective co-leaders. Sheryl Yoast, although she was nine years old, provided leadership. Her love for the game and relationship with her father provided her with experience needed to accurately interoperate certain situations and provide effective feedback. For example, she observed flaws from the stands in the Titans ability to properly defend the opposing team in the state championship. During the preamble phase of the half-time, she convinced her father to step outside of the box to solicit help which resulted in unorthodox substitution techniques that totally through off the opposing team. If she had not have been actively involved and observant of the game, she would not had positively provoked her father to make the changes. The changes were made to defense and the defense created the fumble in the last minutes. The changes altered the situation which resulted in flaws that caused the fumble. The fumble resulted in the Titans scoring with no time left on the clock. Without Sheryl Yoast recommendations, what would the outcome of the came would have been? What are the effects that one recommendation can have on history? Would this story have been told if the Titans have lost? Would the town and the team continued to remain positive and united? The decision to change the coaching staff shifted the pyridine of the community and had to be viewed through all lenses. Politically, placing an African American coach in the head coach position pacified the situation over the young teenager’s death. Structurally, if Coach Yoast had maintained the head coach position, the politically ramifications of the teenager death would not have been satisfied because of the anger around the individuals death. The impact of the change had to be highly significant. The human resource view satisfied some lower level needs of the Maslow hierarchy of needs (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2006). Their belongingness needs of the upset African Americans were satisfied indirectly by Coach Boone hiring as the Titans head coach. Symbolically, placing an African American as the head coach of a prestigious high school team symbolizes change. Viewing the decision to hire Coach Boone and place him in the position of head coach fit all four frames which is why the outcome was successful. . In conclusion, look deep into this quote, â€Å"Follow as well as lead† (Lewis, 1993). Look beyond the words. This is true because it’s amazing as to where new styles and ideas can come from. What would have been the outcome if Coach Boone shut down and isolated himself from any input from his staff? What if Coach Boone and Coach Yoast were identical racially and psychologically? What if Coach Boone was only hired to be the Assistant Coach? The answer behind any successful transition is within the follower relationship to the leader (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2006). This movie provides a great deal of insight regarding the use of leadership and methods that positively influenced the outcome of the situation. The situation are several: Coach Boone and Coach Yoats belief in the overall purpose, providing dignity to those who’ve only seen degradation (Fields, F, Zwick, E. 989), the desegregation of the school system, merging society into one, uniting the team, etc. Although only a few of the theories were available at the time or just myths, all identified leaders exhibited sound leadership and follower ship identified by modern research on leadership. This paper visited several leadership theories and methods from respected sources and compare and contras some situations to current situations experienced with modern theories. Analysis Of To Kill A Mockingbird English Literature Essay

Analysis Of To Kill A Mockingbird English Literature Essay Miss Maudie uses her intelligence to give Scout wise advice. Scout learns many life lessons and matures using Miss Maudie’s insightful words. One evening, as Scout and Miss Maudie are sitting on her front porch, Miss Maudie teaches Scout an important lesson: â€Å"‘à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of–oh, of your father'† (46). Miss Maudie shows Scout that [à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦]. Another important life lesson Miss Maudie teaches Scout is after the shooting of old Tim Johnson. While the children are glum that Atticus can’t do anything, he is revealed to be the deadest shot in town. However, they also learn of Atticus putting his gun down: â€Å"Maybe I can tell you,† said Miss Maudie. â€Å"If your father’s anything, he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift of God, a talent–oh, you have to practice to make it perfect, but shootin’s diffe rent from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot till he had to, and he had to today.† â€Å"Looks like he’d be proud of it,† I said. â€Å"People in their right minds never take pride in their talents,† said Miss Maudie. (98) Miss Maudie helps Scout sees why Atticus put his gun down. She shows Scout that Atticus saw he had an unfair advantage over other living things. Scout learns that Atticus didn’t take pride being the deadest shot in Maycomb and instead put his gun down because having an unfair advantage wasn’t really anything to be proud about. And she also implies that Scout should be humble, a good trait of character in life. Miss Maudie is a reference for Scout as she helps her understand major lessons. After the children receive their air guns, they are excited to go out and shoot. Atticus tells them to shoot all the blue jays they want, but never mockingbirds. Confused, Scout goes to Miss Maudie in which she finds her answer: â€Å"‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird'† (90). While Miss Maudie is saying it is a sin to kill mockingbirds, she is really referring to the big picture. Miss Maudie is comparing mockingbirds to weaker people of the society who can’t help but be abused. While they benefit us in so many ways, all we do is harass them. This is a key theme and idea in the book and also a very important lesson for Scout. Through intuitive advice, Miss Maudie helps Scout become a mature, wise child. In addition to being the intelligent woman she is, Miss Maudie is also just. Miss Maudie treats people the same way no matter what their circumstances are. During the summertime, while Jem and Dill are busy scheming over plans to get Boo to come out, Scout becomes closer to Miss Maudie. One evening, Scout asks Miss Maudie about Arthur â€Å"Boo† Radley and tells her about the rumors, which causes Miss Maudie to say: â€Å"‘I remember Arthur Radley when he was a boy. He always spoke nicely to me, no matter what folks said he did. Spoke as nicely as he knew how'† (45-46). This example shows that Miss Maudie is not prejudiced against other people. Miss Maudie doesn’t judge Arthur based on rumors and other information. Instead, she sees Arthur for who he really is, based on true experiences and facts. She sees Arthur as a nice boy while everyone else sees him as a delinquent all because she based her opinions on the truth, bringing out the good in people that the lies cover. But Miss Maudie’s righteousness doesn’t stop with the white people. Miss Maudie also believes in justice for people at the bottom of the hierarchy in Maycomb, the African Americans. During the night of the trial, Miss Maudie sits down on her front porch and waits for the Finches to come home. While she waits, she begins to have thoughts, which she tells to Jem the next morning: â€Å"‘as I waited I thought, Atticus Finch won’t win, he can’t win, but he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that. And I thought to myself, well, we’re making a step–it’s just a baby-step, but it’s a step†Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ (216). Miss Maudie knows that Atticus won’t win because of the racism still around from years of traditions. However, she also sees the case would have been an easy decision with an inexperienced lawyer, except that Atticus held the jury out for so long, it was apparent they were wavering in their decisions. While they still voted Tom guilty, Miss Maudie sees that that momentary indecision is another step, no matter how small, towards justice and freedom for all people. She associates herself with the people that want to make a step towards justice by saying â€Å"we’re† and also praising Atticus for helping make that step. And even though there are racism and injustice, there are people like Miss Maudie to spread fairness throughout the town, one baby-step at a time.

Performance and reward management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Performance and reward management - Essay Example What is required in this day and age is a vision to set things right and that too in the long run scheme of things. The payroll costs are decreasing and so are the cuts within the performance rewards for the sake of the employees. This is because the payroll costs have meant an extra burden on the organizations and add to that the discussion of the performance rewards is something that is completely out of sync with the understanding that one reaches upon. Therefore, what is deemed as significant here is the reckoning that performance rewards will give in the best mileage if these are handled in a proper and adequate way, and when the organizations understand that the employees are their most prizes resources, and giving them incentives would only mean more and more success at the end of the day. This paper discusses why payroll costs are a burden on the shoulders of the organizations in the current times and how the performance rewards are discerned and measured in the same perspect ive. The payroll costs within the organizations could be brought down if there is a sense of purpose and collective responsibility within the top management domains to make the same as a possible initiative. What this suggests is the fact that organizations in this day and age are doing their utmost to make sure that the payroll costs are brought under the hammer but what they are forgetting all this while is the understanding that these elements need to be tackled in a proper perspective and with immense foresight. More than anything else, there is a need to set things right which unfortunately the payroll costs and deductions in the same might not fulfill. Therefore, one can deem the same comprehensions to be out of sync because the employees are looking to expand on their salaries through pay raises and the like but what the organizations are looking forward to offering them are totally opposite pay structures (Heyes, 1996). However balancing the two seems like a difficult exerci se, and more so when the talk goes out loud regarding the payroll costs being a massive burden on the organizational shoulders. Therefore, much consideration is indeed important towards the relevant domains because the organizations of today are banking direly on the positives that the employees can incorporate within their ranks. The payroll costs are important to have know-how about because these form the essence of an employee’s realms and he would never appreciate if these are cut down for no mistake of his (Poole, 1998). When the payroll costs are thought of as a burden, then the organizations cannot derive much sanity from the related ranks. Hence it is always a good practice to think of these payroll costs in the light of the money spent on the resources which are available at the disposal of the organizations, and it is this arsenal which forms the backbone under the related scenarios. The changing business environment circumstances usually implicate for the discussio n on payroll costs coming to the fore. What this suggests is the fact that the payroll costs would be seen as a burden on the shoulders of the organization and that the employees would view the entire ballgame of salaries and pays to be a difficult task for the sake of the organizational top heads. They would find it hard to arrange for their salaries which would eventually mean that the employees
